Civil war specimen

Stump of Femur.ÌýGreatly thickened cortex shows the openings of several sinuses (FIG. 1) that drained an abscess cavity in the medulla.

After sustaining an injury at Petersburg on July 30, 1864, the patient was admitted to a field hospital on August 3 for amputation; a 6-inch sequestrum was removed the from stump on November 29. The specimen shown here was resected in 1866 and the remaining portion of the femur was disarticulated in 1871. The pensioner died in 1874, of unknown cause.
