Kai Chan - an interdisciplinary, problem-oriented sustainability scientist trained in ecology, policy, and ethics research - was the first MSSI invited speaker of 2019. His talk proposed听a relational value approach, as听opposed to听command-and-control听or market-based approaches, to environmental policy and the valuation of听ecosystem services. Prof. Chan is based at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia and was lead author on the 2019. He leads (Connecting Human and Natural Systems) at UBC and is co-founder of (a Community of Small-Planet Heroes).
