Transforming Universities for Just And Sustainable Futures: A Lunch & Learn with Dr. Julia Wittmayer

This past September, the , in partnership with the ۲ݮƵ Sustainability Systems Initiative (MSSI), hosted a Lunch and Learn session with Dr. Julia Wittmayer from Erasmus University Rotterdam. The event brought together students, faculty, and other members of the ۲ݮƵ community to explore the role universities can play in addressing today’s most pressing societal and ecological challenges.

In her talk, Dr. Wittmayer emphasized the need for transdisciplinary research to tackle complex issues, and involving societal stakeholders such as policymakers and communities. Dr. Wittmayer highlighted the as a case study to illustrate how this institutional experiment at Erasmus University Rotterdam can reshape the university’s role in society. The DIT Platform encourages new transformative approaches to research, education, and engagement. By doing so, the DIR Platform is making strides in shaping the future of higher education.

The event was highly engaging, with lively discussions following Dr. Wittmayer’s presentation. Dr. Wittmayer opened the floor to discussions about challenges in the process of radical transformations, from balancing transformation goals with “slow academia” to engaging senior administrators who may be resistant to change. Participants were encouraged to share their personal experiences and think critically about how ۲ݮƵ and other institutions can adopt similar transformative strategies, leveraging their academic resources and communities to create social and environmental progress.

With the overall event a success, the MSSI continues to foster these important conversations, paving the way for ۲ݮƵ to be at the forefront of sustainability research in higher education.
