On April 4, 2019, I had my first ever seizure. I was 17 at the time and had never previously had any issues with seizures. I thought that maybe it was just a "one time scare". Little did I know at the time that I would start having recurring seizures. I ended up needing to stay at The Neuro. This included several different tests and constant supervision until I had a confirmed diagnosis of focal and general epilepsy.
Since my diagnosis, navigating epilepsy has been a journey filled with both challenges and triumphs. However, I've learned to prioritize self-care and listen to my body. I'm grateful to share that I've been seizure-free for over a year and a half, approaching two years in June.
The Neuro played such an incredible role of my journey through my diagnosis. The care that I received was remarkable considering my lack of prior experience with extended hospital stays and medical testing. This caused a lot of initial anxiety. My neurologist, Dr. Raluca Pana, and all the nurses that supported me throughout the week made me feel so safe and cared for that it alleviated my concerns and provided me with the strength to navigate this new chapter of life, where I must prioritize my health and well-being.
Dispelling epilepsy myths
I believe one of the biggest misconceptions about epilepsy is that there is only one type of epilepsy, and the idea that it's all about sensitivity to flashing lights. I've come across this misconception so many times, and it’s surprising how many people aren't aware that there are different types of epilepsy with various triggers beyond just lights.
I personally think that there needs to be more awareness surrounding epilepsy, especially among young people like me. Knowing how to recognize seizures, understanding different triggers, and knowing how to respond can make a huge difference.
Giving back
The incredible, life-ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ care I received when I was admitted for a week of testing, and the care I still get to this day, inspired me to choose The Neuro when, in my second year of business at my college, I received an assignment to create a fundraiser. My team was a vital part of making the fundraiser run smoothly and we successfully raised $1,345. A special thanks to my dearest friend Audrey Campeau as well as the other team members for all the help. We are beyond grateful for the people that donated to The Neuro and the opportunity we had to do this.
