Carol McLeod Faculty Award: Past Recipients

The Carol McLeod Faculty Award in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, made possible through a generous gift to the Faculty of Engineering from alumnus David P. J. McLeod, aims to support and recognize the exceptional teaching and research innovation efforts of professors within the Faculty of Engineering affiliated with TISED and contribute to renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Prof. Sarah Jordaan was the inaugural Carol McLeod Faculty Award recipient. Prof. Jordaan's project will focused on EV battery deployment, vehicle electrification and application of circular economy concepts to the management of Li-ion batteries within a Canadian context.

In May 2024 Prof. Jordaan organized a Research Workshop, a CircuBatt Chat, exploring the challenges posed by the expanding Canadian lithium-ion battery market.

The two-day event, brought together circular economy (CE) and lithium battery experts to discus the current market trends, key actors, and enablers driving the transition towards circular solutions for the battery market. The workshop included a pubic panel discussion titled “Empowering sustainability: circular markets for lithium-ion batteries” and included panelists representing industry, academia and government viewpoints.

A workshop report and a peer-reviewed publication from the workshop findings are currently being prepared.
