۲ݮƵ Desautels Faculty of Management alum Tim Thompson (MBA’90) served as the keynote speaker at this year’s Lavender Grad, an event celebrating the graduation of ۲ݮƵ students who identify as two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, trans, queer, intersex, or non-binary.

The event served as a special recognition for the exceptional accomplishments of students who have successfully completed their degrees in the Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs during the academic year of Fall 2022 and Winter 2023. Humanity has the skill to solve our most pressing problems, but cooperation is our greatest challenge, says Nabil Anouti, who is ۲ݮƵ Desautels’ valedictorian for the Spring 2023 Convocation. But Anouti is optimistic, and this view has been shaped by a Desautels education.
On May 4, members of the ۲ݮƵ community gathered at Maison Manuvie for the 2023 ۲ݮƵ Alumni Association Awards and Honours, which recognize alumni, friends, students, faculty, and staff who stand out for their impressive contributions and achievements in service to ۲ݮƵ, the MAA and in their respective communities. A few weeks after starting his MBA at ۲ݮƵ University, Mohammed Ashour, MSc’11, MBA’19 received an email announcing the Hult Prize — an annual, year-long competition that challenges university-level students to solve a pressing social issue. Teaming up with Gabe Mott (MBA’14), Ashour recruited three other colleagues from their MBA cohort: Shobhita Soor (BSc’10, BCL/LLB’15, MBA’15), Jesse Pearlstein (MBA’14), and Zev Thompson (ѵ’14).
Ram Panda (MEng’71, MBA’77), ۲ݮƵ's Lead Planned Giving Ambassador and former Chair of the Board of Governors, will receive a Doctor of Laws honoris causa from the School of Continuing Studies at their convocation ceremony on June 7 at 6:30 PM. The Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians (CAEP) has honoured two graduates from ۲ݮƵ’s International Masters for Health Leadership (IMHL) program. Dr. Judy Morris, graduating this spring, was named Emergency Physician of the Year, while Dr. François de Champlain (IMHL'21) received the Special Merit Award, recognizing him as as a leader in making Canadian Emergency Medicine what it is today.
One of this year’s three Black Grad valedictorians, Julia Ayim (BCom’23) has just completed a Bachelor of Commerce specializing in Strategic Management and Organizational Behaviour at the Desautels Faculty of Management. She and fellow graduates were celebrated at the annual Black Grad gala on April 30, a sold-out event organized by the Black Students’ Network of ۲ݮƵ (BSN).
As chief of the Service de police de l’Agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL), Fady Dagher (EMBA’12) carried out a real revolution in the force, and he has now taken the reins of the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) as its new chief, writes ۲ݮƵ Alumni News. In Longueil, Dagher took the concept of “community policing” one step further by creating a “partnership police force” that works hand-in-hand with social services. Dagher credits ۲ݮƵ Desautels Prof.
To understand the impact of the climate crisis on younger ۲ݮƵ, empathy is a place to start. It is a necessary part of confronting, but on its own, it is not enough. Desautels lecturer Anita Nowak (BA'97, BCom'97, PhD'11) recently published her book Purposeful Empathy, which is described as an inspiring and powerful read by Quebec MNA Désirée McGraw in a review for Policy Magazine. “This is a book that helps middle-aged people like me understand, collaborate and ultimately innovate with the next generation of Millennials and Gen Z,” McGraw says.
As part of this Spring’s Convocation celebrations, ۲ݮƵ University will award honorary degrees — the highest order it can bestow — to 17 exceptional individuals who have made considerable contributions to society. Serge Godin, O.C., O.Q., Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LL.D.), founder of CGI and a prominent figure in the Canadian technology industry, will be awarded an honorary degree from ۲ݮƵ’s Desautels Faculty of Management on Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
About thirty managers and entrepreneurs attended a recent ۲ݮƵ Mini-MBA course in Matane, Quebec. It was the first time this type of course has been delivered in one of Quebec’s regions beyond Montreal and was the brainchild of local businessman François Rioux (MBA’10). “When you are on-location, you can see the energy and better understand the stakes, the challenges, and the successes,” says Eric Saine, the Executive Director of ۲ݮƵ Executive Education. Now Senior Manager, Enterprise Sustainable Finance, TD Bank Group, he first joined the Bank as an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) intern. He credits the MMF program’s flexibility with allowing him to explore the intersection between finance and sustainability.
