R. Grant Ingram Memorial Fund

Professor R. Grant Ingram passed away suddenly in his office at the University of British Columbia on June 13, 2007.

He was born on February 15, 1945, to Tom and Anne Ingram, in Warrington, England. He completed his B.Sc. (1965) and M.Sc. (1967) degrees at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University. His Ph.D. was earned in 1971 from the joint program in Oceanography from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as a Lecturer at the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University Institute of Oceanography in 1971, as an Assistant Professor from 1972 to 1976, and as an Associate Professor from 1976 to 1987. He was promoted to Full Professor in 1988 in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. Grant moved to the University of British Columbia's (UBC's) Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences in 1997, and also served as the founding principal of St. John's College from 1997 to 2004. He was also UBC's Dean of Science Pro Tem, Associate Dean, and more recently, the Principal of the College for Interdisciplinary Studies.

Grant was an internationally renowned scholar, and received many awards, and most recently, he was named a Fellow of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (May 2007).

In memory of Grant and his long and distinguished association with the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ community, the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences has established the R. Grant Ingram Memorial Fund. Proceeds from this fund may be used to offer graduate student support, preferably in the domain of physical oceanography, or for the support of a symposium in physical oceanography.
